The race area is primarily pine forest with low to moderate undergrowth, interspersed with some bare granite slab. Steepness is moderate by California standards, with some dramatic terrain and spectacular views mixed in. The map was made by Bill Cusworth in 2016 using USGS contour data combined with features derived by aerial photos such as roads and vegetation boundaries. The map is 1:25000 scale with 10 meter contours and uses mostly standard orienteering symbols but with a few new symbols to delineate the different types of granite areas from one another. Come experience the true wildness of Sierra Nevada mountains to challenge yourself, and the top North American navigators! Top finishers in each division of the 24-hr qualify for the World Rogaining Championships in 2020 at Tahoe-Northstar. 2019 NAV-X Challenge #3 - 100 Lakes - 3 or 6 Hour Map Adventure - July 27-Aug 17, 2019

NAVX

** Note: We had to move the dates because there is still too much snow on the course. ** The Sierra Nevada mountains of California are world famous for their beauty and wildness. However, almost all of the upper elevations is federally designated Wilderness and therefore forbidden for organized group events or races. 100 Lakes is one of the rare regions around 7000 feet where we are allowed to race (low impact style) and we are excited to bring you the 2019 NAV-X Challenge #3 at this beautiful venue! The race area has mostly low/moderate undergrowth and steepness, by California standards, and there are close to a hundred small lakes in the basin. The mapped area supports a map trek up to about 8+ hrs. The West part of the mapped area has some reddish rock areas, more broken up, while the rest is typical Sierra granite slabs scattered throughout. There are a few trails, though much of the advanced control points will require long stretches of cross country travel. It will be possible for beginners to string together loops that will make significant use of trails. Due to the few access points to the area, we will have a remote start/finish - plan for a 15 minute downhill walk to the Start, and then again back up after finishing (same place as the Start). A NAV-X representative will be there on race day to hand out maps and start everyone off.

This is a brand new map, folks. It should be a real treat for anyone who enjoys the high country at the best time of year, whether you are looking for a scenic hike, or an endurance race against some of the best in the west! This beautiful park has typical Bay Area hill terrain with a mix of grassy, open areas, open forest, and some brush. Solos are allowed! The loops can be up to 5, 4, 4, and 3 hours in duration, with corresponding 1, 2, 2, and 3 hour rest stops - that's 16 hours of racing in a 24 hour period. You may stack two rests back to back for a longer break if you'd like. 2017 Tahoe Nav Sports Weekend-NAV-X Challenge #4 (3 or 6-hr Map Trek) + O-event - September 9-10, 2017

NAVX Truckee OC

The Sierra Nevada mountains of California are world famous for their beauty and wildness. However, almost all of the upper elevations is federally designated Wilderness and therefore forbidden for organized group events or races. Little Truckee Summit is one of the rare, permittable regions around 7000 feet and we are excited to bring you the 2017 NAV-X Challenge #4 at this beautiful venue! The race area has mostly low/moderate undergrowth and steepness, by California standards. The mapped area supports a map trek up to about 3+ hrs. What this means is that the 6 hr course on Sunday will do two loops through the same general area. The 3 hr course on Sunday goes through once, like a regular map trek. 6 hr participants: All course planning for both loops is done before the start of the first loop, however, you will not be able to bring the loop 2 map with you on your first loop. You may take however much time you want on your first loop, but you must return from your second loop within 6 hours, or face penalty points. There will also be 4 standard middle distance orienteering courses offered on Saturday. See http://www.truckeeorienteering.org/#sept910 for more information about Saturday's event.

If you participated last year, we will be using the South part of the map. Mats Jansson is designing 4- or 8-hour adventures using an improved topo map. With all the snow last winter, creeks will be flowing, and there may even be a patch of snow left here and there on some shady North facing slopes. It should be a real treat for anyone who enjoys the high country, whether you are looking for a scenic hike, or an endurance race against some of the best in the west! We are limited to 75 participants by the forest ranger so sign up early to get a spot!

Success therefore depends on raw speed, of course, but also on the ability to read the map, make good route choices and execute them efficiently.
